Our Story

CogAbility was founded in 2017 by former IBM engineer, consultant, and technology author Jim Hoskins. Jim has a long history of excellence in helping businesses leverage technology through publications, mobile apps, and complete AI solutions.  As one of the first 75 companies invited to work with the IBM Watson team, CogAbility leverages IBM Watson and other top AI technologies from Google, Amazon, OpenAI, and others to help businesses gain competitive advantage in exciting new ways.

Jim Hoskins - Founder & President

Founder and President Jim Hoskins was an early pioneer in the application of machine learning to solve real-world problems. He served as an engineer with IBM’s NASA Space Shuttle program developing next-generation avionics with speech recognition and with IBM’s speech recognition research labs as part of IBM’s PC development team.  Jim has authored over 40 books including the Exploring IBM series which sold over 350,000 copies.

Vernon Niven - COO & Provost

After serving as an advisor for four years, Mr. Niven joined CogAbility in 2022 to accelerate our growth.  Vernon has 25 years of experience building and leading SaaS, enterprise software, and AI-driven businesses. Prior to CogAbility, Vernon founded and served as CEO of two digital media businesses based on AI; served as founding President of Twinspires.com, Churchill Downs’s $1B online gaming business; helped launch Tumri, the world’s first dynamic creative ad platform that raised over $30mm; created & led Aspect Development’s eContent business prior to the company’s $9B acquisition; and, co-led Accenture’s $100 million global eProcurement practice in the late 1990s.

Carlton Ulmer - VP, College of Health Care

After a successful 26-year career in health care where he worked with the largest privately held physician group in Georgia to 20 years with HCA Healthcare, Mr Ulmer led innovation and strategic growth initiatives in various roles to include Executive/President of HCA Healthcare in LA, TN, GA, FL & TX. He has experience with public/private partnerships and military while serving on community boards to include Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development, and Education. After one year as advisor, Mr Ulmer joined CogAbility to lead growth in the health care sector.

Stephen Hadley - Lead Developer

Prior to joining CogAbility as our software engineering leader, Stephen spent over 20 years leading successful software engineering projects and programs at General Electric/NBC, Merrill Lynch, and Kingston Systems.
